A second referendum may be the only way to end the ‘sorry shambles’ of Brexit, former Tory Cabinet minister Lord Patten will warn today.
Lord Patten has endorsed the ‘People’s Vote’ campaign for a new vote despite admitting his loathing of referendums.
In a speech at lunchtime, he will urge MPs to reject Theresa May’s divorce deal next week and vote to block a no-deal Brexit.
Lord Patten will say that if Parliament cannot agree a close future relationship with the EU, possibly inside the customs union and single market, then a new referendum is the only way forward.
He will compare the Prime Minister to Dr Strangelove, the scientist in Stanley Kubrick’s Cold War satire about nuclear destruction.
Lord Patten, who has previously said he hates referendums, will use a speech in London to say another vote may be required.
‘The whole sorry shambles began with a decision to call a referendum in order to try to manage the English nationalist right wing of the Conservative Party,’ he will say.
