Grindr is a gay social network app. It has recently conducted a study to see how many gay men will be convinced by posted ads to get a free HIV infection testing kit. 56 men were tested and answered several survey questions and two of them learned of their infection by using the kit.
The study focused on gay Hispanic and black men in Los Angeles since they are the most likely to get infected and the least likely to get tested for the HIV virus. They used banner ads in which they offered HIV testing kits for free. Access to the kits was through pharmacies, mail and a vending machine in the parking lot of the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
The efforts were fruitful since 69% men, who hadn’t been tested during the last 6 months, answered the survey questions.
This is a hopeful start which will reduce immensely the spread of HIV infection among gay men since Grindr is utilized by 5 million men in 192 countries.
