Real Madrid news: Dani Carvajal wary of Liverpool threat in Champions League semi-finals

REAL MADRID are well aware of the threat posed to them by Liverpool, Roma and Bayern Munich ahead of this afternoon’s Champions League draw. That’s what defender Dani Carvajal has admitted, as Real wait to learn their semi-final opponents. The reigning European champions sealed their progress to the last four in circumstances far more dramatic than were expected, surrendering their 3-0 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu by the hour mark.

Mario Mandzukic’s double and a Blaise Matuidi effort drew the Italian giants level on the night but in an incredible finish, Real earned a last-gasp penalty through Lucas Vazquez.Gianluigi Buffon was sent off for protesting the decision and in the 97th minute, that man Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to slam home the spot-kick for his 15th Champions League goal of the campaign.Elsewhere Liverpool overcame Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate, Roma overturned a 4-1 first-leg loss against Barcelona to win 3-0 in the return tie and progress on away goals and Bayern Munich saw off Sevilla 2-1 over two legs.

And Spain international Carvajal has acknowledged the threat of the three sides that could be pitted against Zinedine Zidane’s side in the semi-final draw later today (midday).”We saw it with Barcelona, anybody can knock you out and we’ve had a difficult game here [against Juventus],” he said. “I was confident we’d go through, be it over 90 minutes or after extra time, I knew that we’d progress.“There are no favourites at this stage. The four teams in the semi-finals could end up winning it and we’re aware of that as we try to make it through to Kiev.”Carvajal admitted that the La Liga giants were shocked by the nature of their clash with Juve but argued that the contentious late penalty was the right call from Michael Oliver – who earned huge criticism from Buffon in particular post-match.“We didn’t think the game would happen like that, at 0-3,” the right-back added. “The Champions League is full of tough games, we had that tough game [here] and now we can celebrate.
