New coach Kelly Clarkson could not hold back her tears on Wednesday as her team was slashed in half on The Voice.
‘I’m totally crying,’ the Since U Been Gone star admitted in the first of two times she had tears as she played a part in which three of her remaining six were sent home.
‘I hate this show,’ Kelly, 35, joked of her first time as coach on the NBC singing competition show.
She was not the only one with harsh words for the new format where the coaches pick just one of their remaining six to go through, with the other two spots decided by viewers’ votes.
‘This is absolutely atrocious — I wanted to quit today, they wouldn’t let me,’ Alicia Keys said before making her pick, while Blake Shelton said it ‘sucks so bad’ and was ‘awful.’
‘I don’t like this new format — it’s really stupid and I hope we never have to do this again,’ Adam Levine agreed, telling his final hopefuls: ‘I want to go with all of you.’
Crunch time for the coaches came at the end of three consecutive nights of live performances for the remaining contestants battling to get to the Top 12 next week.
Brynn Cartelli, Britton Buchanan, Kyla Jade, and Sharane Calister waited to see who would join them after they were voted in on Monday night by viewers.
Fans then got to pick just one from each team to join them, with gruff-voiced country rocker Pryor Baird getting through on Team Blake and Alicia’s Jackie Foster going through thanks to performances from their Tuesday night performances.
Emotional Kelly then saw Kaleb Lee voted through not long after she called him ‘ridiculously talented’ after his version of Thomas Rhett’s Die A Happy Man.
